Apple begins new campus construction, all-new Mac Pro production in Austin

Apple has announced the beginning of construction on its new $1 billion, 3-million-square-foot campus in Austin, Texas. The American multinational technology company is also manufacturing the all-new Mac Pro at a 244,000-square-foot production facility close to the construction site.

The campus construction is part of Apple’s broad expansion in Austin.

The Mac Pro units being built at the nearby facility will be shipped to customers starting in December.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said on the occasion, “Building the Mac Pro, Apple’s most powerful device ever, in Austin is both a point of pride and a testament to the enduring power of American ingenuity.”

He added, “With the construction of our new campus in Austin now underway, Apple is deepening our close bond with the city and the talented and diverse workforce that calls it home. Responsible for 2.4 million American jobs and counting, Apple is eager to write our next chapter here and to keep contributing to America’s innovation story.”

The Austin growth is part of Apple’s nationwide expansion, which the company announced back in January of last year, to increase its investment in engineering, manufacturing and other jobs across the United States. The company says it is on its way to contributing $350 billion to the US economy between 2018 and 2023, and will hire 20,000 more employees in cities across the country during these years.

The new Austin campus, which is expected to open in 2022, will initially house 5000 employees. Later, it is expected to be the workplace of 15000. At present, Apple has approximately 7000 employees in Austin – a 50+ percent increase in the last five years.

Unveiled at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference in June, the all-new Mac Pro, says the company in the press release announcing this news, is its most powerful machine ever, and 15000 times faster than the original Mac.
