FDA, CDC probe 79 salmonella cases linked to August Egg Company’s recalled eggs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), working alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local partners, is investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to brown cage free and brown certified organic eggs from August Egg Company of Hilmar, California.

The investigation was first posted on June 5 and remains ongoing as authorities trace the source and extent of contaminated product.

The FDA sent out an outbreak investigation alert email to subscribers of its MedWatch — the FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program — newsletter; US and Global News is among those subscribers.

Based on CDC’s epidemiological information, 79 people across seven states have been infected with the outbreak strain. Illness onsets occurred between February 24 and May 17. Of the 30 patients for whom exposure information is available, 27 reported eating eggs or egg-containing dishes before falling ill. To date, 21 individuals have been hospitalized; no deaths have been reported.

Reported illnesses have been confirmed in Arizona, California, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada and Washington. The eggs have been distributed to retailers and food service locations in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington and Wyoming. The FDA warns that additional states may also have received the eggs.

In response, August Egg Company has recalled all potentially affected brown cage free and brown certified organic eggs. Consumers are urged to check refrigerators for cartons marked with Julian dates “32” through “126” alongside plant codes “P-6562” or “CA-5330,” and to return any recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Salmonella infections typically manifest 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food, with symptoms — diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps — lasting four to seven days. Young children, adults over age 65 and immunocompromised individuals face higher risks of severe illness.

Recommendations

  • Retailers, consumers and restaurants should not sell, eat or serve the August company recalled eggs.
  • Sanitization: Clean and sanitize any surfaces, utensils or containers that have come into contact with raw eggs.
  • Product disposal: Return the recalled eggs for a refund or discard them if original packaging is missing.
  • Hand hygiene: Wash hands, utensils and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling raw eggs or egg dishes.
  • Medical attention: Contact a healthcare provider if you develop symptoms of Salmonella infection after consuming eggs.
  • Adverse event reporting: Consumers, patients and healthcare professionals are encouraged to report any illness or side effect related to these eggs via FDA’s MedWatch program — submit reports online or request a form by calling 1-800-332-1088 for mail-in submission or by fax to 1-800-FDA-0178.

The FDA will continue updating this advisory as new information becomes available.
