NASA+ on Netflix happening this summer

In a move that highlights the growing convergence of science and streaming media, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced a new partnership with Netflix to expand access to its live programming.

Beginning this summer, audiences will be able to watch NASA+ content directly on Netflix, giving millions more people the chance to witness live views of Earth from the International Space Station, astronaut spacewalks, rocket launches and mission updates.

NASA+ is the US space agency’s free, ad-free streaming platform that provides live and on-demand video coverage of NASA missions, rocket launches, astronaut activities, educational programming and behind-the-scenes content about space exploration. Launched as part of NASA’s efforts to make its work more accessible to the public, NASA+ was already available through the NASA app and the agency’s website, allowing anyone to follow the latest developments in science, technology and space research without cost.

According to NASA, its collaboration with Netflix aligns with its longstanding mission to share the story of space exploration as widely as possible.

In a press release that NASA sent out via email to its mailing list-registered members of the press, and which US and Global News also received, Rebecca Sirmons, the general manager of NASA+ at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, stated, “The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience.”

She added, “Together, we’re committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration – inspiring new generations – right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand from their phone.”

Netflix, which currently serves more than 700 million subscribers around the globe, will be a new platform for NASA’s live and on-demand content. The agency says the initiative is part of its broader push to connect with people through multiple channels, from streaming and social media to live events and educational outreach.

Despite this new partnership, NASA+ will remain free and ad-free on the NASA app and the agency’s official website, says NASA in the press release we also received. Additional details about the new programming lineup and broadcast schedules are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

This collaboration signals NASA’s commitment to modernizing how it shares its missions, discoveries, and innovations — bringing the wonders of space exploration into living rooms and mobile screens worldwide.
