93rd Oscars: 27 animations, 238 documentaries, 93 intl. features eligible

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in a press release it sent to legitimate members of the press that are on the Academy Press List the feature films eligible for consideration in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and International Feature Film categories for the 93rd Oscars.

Twenty-seven animated feature movies, 238 documentary feature films and 93 international feature films are eligible, said the press release US and Global News also received from the Academy. The 93 international feature films each represent their countries, with one feature-length movie being submitted by each of the 93 countries. Suriname, Lesotho and Sudan have submitted films for the Oscars for the first time.

In the Animated Feature Film category, five nominees are to be determined. Movies submitted in this category also qualify for the 93rd Oscars in other categories, including Best Picture.

In the Documentary Feature Film category, 15 nominees are to be determined and will be announced on February 9th. Also eligible in the category are the feature-length documentaries that have participated in the category of International Feature Film as their country’s official selection, been programmed at qualifying film festivals or won a qualifying award. Similar to the Animated Feature Film category, the films in this category are also eligible for the 93rd Oscars in other categories, including Best Picture.

In the International Feature Film category too, 15 nominees are to be determined, and like the Documentary Feature Film category, will be announced on February 9th. The Academy defines an international feature film as a feature-length motion picture that is over 40 minutes in duration and is produced outside the United States with a predominantly — over 50% — non-English dialogue.

Nominations for the 93rd Oscars will be announced on March 15th, while the awards ceremony will be held on April 25th. The 93rd Academy Awards (aka Oscar Awards) will be televised live on ABC in the US and globally (more than 225 countries and territories).
