‘Joker’ to be re-released across North America starting Jan. 17

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that its late 2019 hit, “Joker,” will be re-released to over 750 theaters across North America starting Friday, January 17, 2020.

BRON Creative, Village Roadshow Pictures and DC Films are also the production companies that are behind the movie.

“Joker” has received many awards and award nominations across all categories. It garnered 11 BAFTA and Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture – more than any other movie; two Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globe wins, for the outstanding performance of lead actor Joaquin Phoenix and the haunting score of music composer Hildur Guðnadóttir; and the top Golden Lion honor at the Venice Film Festival.

Other accolades of the movie to date include the Palm Springs International Film Festival Chairman’s Award for Phoenix; two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations; Variety’s Creative Impact in Directing Award for director Todd Philips; a Producers Guild Award nod; the Camerimage Audience Award and its Golden Frog for cinematographer Lawrence Sher; and several guild nominations.

The film also sits on several coveted Top 10 lists, including AFI.

Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, stated in a press release, “With the continued interest in ‘Joker’ as a result of its recognition during this exciting awards season, we wanted to give audiences the chance to see the film on the big screen, whether for the first time or again.”

“Joker” earned more than $1 billion worldwide in its initial run to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. Phillips also co-wrote the movie with screenwriter and director Scott Silver of “The Fighter” and “8 Mile” fame.

“…[also] produced by Todd Phillips, ‘Joker’ is the filmmaker’s original vision of the infamous DC villain, an origin story infused with, but distinctly outside, the character’s more traditional mythologies,” says the Warner Bros. Pictures news release. “Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society.”

It further says, “Longing for any light to shine on him, he tries his hand as a stand-up comic, but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty and, ultimately, betrayal, Arthur makes one bad decision after another that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty, allegorical character study.”

The movie also stars Oscar winner Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull,” “The Godfather: Part II”), Frances Conroy (TV’s “American Horror Story,” Hulu’s “Castle Rock”), Zazie Beetz (TV’s “Atlanta,” “Deadpool 2”), Brett Cullen (“42,” Netflix’s “Narcos”), Bill Camp (“Red Sparrow,” “Molly’s Game”), Glenn Fleshler (TV’s “Billions,” “Barry”), Shea Whigham (“First Man,” “Kong: Skull Island”), Douglas Hodge (“Red Sparrow,” TV’s “Penny Dreadful”), Marc Maron (TV’s “Maron,” “GLOW”), Leigh Gill (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) and Josh Pais (“Motherless Brooklyn,” “Going in Style”).
