Oscars producers reveal director, say event to look like movie

Oscars producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins have revealed the director for this year’s awards ceremony and said the event will look like a movie.

The 93rd Oscars will see veteran director Glenn Weiss returning to direct the show.

The ceremony will be televised live on ABC in the United States on April 25. The awards show will also air live on broadcast outlets globally.

“Our plan is that this year’s Oscars will look like a movie, not a television show, and Glenn has embraced this approach and come up with ideas of his own on how to achieve this,” said Oscars producers Soderbergh, Sher and Collins in a press release the Academy distributed to legitimate members of the press and which US and Global News also received from the Academy. “We’re thrilled to have him as part of the brain trust.”

Weiss is a distinguished name especially when it comes to directing live aired events. The numerous live televised shows he has directed include five previous Oscars shows and 19 Tony Awards shows.

For the previous five Oscars, Weiss won two Primetime Emmys. The 19 Tony shows earned him three directing Primetime Emmys. Weiss has also won five Directors Guild of America Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement as of 2015.

Other directing credits of Weiss include this year’s multi-network Inaugural Night special “Celebrating America,” “The Kennedy Center Honors,” “The Democratic National Convention,” “Billboard Music Awards,” “Peter Pan Live!,” “BET Awards,” “Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” “Live from Lincoln Center,” “Primetime Emmy® Awards,” “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular,” the “American Music Awards” and “Garth Brooks, Live from Las Vegas.”

At the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 17 of 2018, Weiss proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, during his acceptance speech for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for his work on 2018’s Oscars.
