China’s vivo unveils new APEX concept smartphone

Chinese smartphone manufacturer vivo unveiled the third generation of its APEX concept smartphone today.

APEX 2020, which builds on the success of its earlier generations, comes equipped with additional advanced technologies.

The smartphone has a 120° FullView Edgeless Display, which gets rid of bezels and side edges from the front view. With vivo Wireless Super FlashCharge 60W and the In-Display Camera, the phone has a Super Unibody Design with no openings. Moreover, the phone’s main camera, which comes with a 5x-7.5x Continuous Optical Zoom, has a gimbal-like structure embedded into it for enhanced visual effects and photography.

“APEX is never a mere ‘concept’ or a glimpse of ‘imagination,’” said Harry Hong, general manager of product at vivo. “It’s a creation that goes beyond any previous experience brought by mobile technology. Through APEX 2020, we are proud to see vivo’s vision come to life as a technology company that continues to push the boundaries of mobile technology and explore what lies beyond the ordinary.”

He added, “It also showcases our ambition to achieve our aspirations step-by-step. vivo will continue to put APEX’s innovative technologies into practice, allowing more consumers to be empowered by such technology.”

Dongguan-headquartered vivo has a global network of research operations and research and development centers in San Diego, Taipei, Tokyo as well as Dongguan, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou.

vivo launched the first generation of APEX at the Mobile World Congress in 2018. The model came with a pop-up front camera, a high screen-to-body ratio (91.2%) and two optical fingerprint scanners under its OLED display. The production edition was called “vivo Nex.”

With its five production bases across China, Southeast Asia and South Asia, vivo is manufacturing nearly two hundred million smartphone units annually.

The news from China came as the country reported fewer confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (called “COVID-19”) and far fewer deaths caused by the virus, which has affected economic activity, including smartphone and related accessories manufacturing, in China.
