Jesús ‘Chuy’ Garcia endorses Bernie Sanders for president

Democratic presidential front-runner Bernie Sanders has been endorsed for president by Jesús G. “Chuy” García, the US Representative for Illinois’s 4th district since 2019.

In a video announcing his support for Sanders, Garcia said the US does not need someone that wants to bring about just a little bit of change.

“We need someone who has been consistent, someone who just doesn’t want to bring about a little bit of change or incremental change,” said Garcia. “I am Congressman Chuy Garcia, and I am supporting Bernie Sanders for president of the US.”

Sanders said he is proud to have Garcia’s support.

“At a time when Donald Trump continues to divide up our country and terrorize immigrants, we need more leaders like Chuy,” wrote Sanders in a Facebook post sharing Garcia’s video. “I am proud to have his support as we say no more to Donald Trump’s cruel and inhumane agenda.”

Garcia further said in the video that Sanders can assemble the biggest alliance in the party to defeat US President Donald Trump.

“Bernie Sanders is the person who can put together the biggest coalition in the Democratic Party to ensure the defeat of Donald Trump and thereafter ensure that the next Congress passes important legislation to improve the well-being of children, of mothers, of the elderly, of everyone in our society,” said Garcia.

Garcia is a member of the Democratic Party. Before his election to Congress, he served on the Cook County Board of Commissioners, Illinois Senate, and Chicago City Council. He was a candidate for Mayor of Chicago in the 2015 election. Finishing second in the February 24 general election, he forced a head-to-head runoff vote between himself and incumbent Rahm Emanuel. He was defeated in the April 7 runoff by Emanuel.

Sanders endorsed Garcia in the 2015 Chicago mayoral election.

Garcia supported Sanders for president in the 2016 presidential election as well.

Sanders backed Garcia in the 2018 House elections in Illinois District 4.
