Mika Brzezinski, Joe Scarborough meet Trump
On today’s episode of “Morning Joe,” hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough shared their recent experience meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. The meeting, which took place this past Friday, was the first time the hosts had seen Trump in seven years.
Brzezinski opened the segment by expressing the widespread concern among political leaders and citizens regarding some of Trump’s cabinet picks. She noted that both she and Scarborough had voiced their own concerns on air and had requested a meeting with Trump, which was subsequently granted.
Scarborough detailed the topics discussed during their meeting, including contentious issues such as abortion, mass deportation and political retribution against opponents and media outlets. He emphasized that, as expected, they did not agree on many issues and made their disagreements clear to Trump.
Despite their differences, Brzezinski highlighted the importance of restarting communications, drawing a parallel to the diplomatic efforts of her father — Zbigniew Brzeziński, counselor to Lyndon B. Johnson from 1966 to 1968 and Jimmy Carter’s National Security Advisor from 1977 to 1981 — with world leaders. She described Trump as cheerful and interested in finding common ground with Democrats on divisive issues. Brzezinski defended their decision to meet with Trump, citing the need for dialogue in a politically divided nation.
Scarborough added that a close associate of Trump told him that the president-elect was not seeking reelection. He noted that many top Democratic leaders have expressed a willingness to work with Trump if he is open to collaboration.
Brzezinski stressed the need for a new approach to political discourse, one that avoids hyperbole and personal attacks. She underscored the importance of constructive leadership and the potential for Trump’s presidency to be consequential, depending on his ability to unite both parties.
The hosts’ meeting with Trump marks a significant step in their efforts to foster dialogue and cooperation in a deeply divided political landscape. Only time will tell if these efforts will lead to meaningful change.
