Trump gets largely negative reviews in global Pew poll
US President Donald Trump has received largely negative reviews in the latest global Pew poll.
Washington, DC-based nonpartisan American think tank Pew Research Center released the results of the global survey on Wednesday.
Thirty-two countries were surveyed, with a median of 64% saying they did not have confidence in Trump to do the right thing in global affairs.
Only 29% said they trusted the president.
Trump was not considered reliable especially in Western Europe. In Spain, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and France, approximately three-in-four or more could not trust the US chief.
Mexico also had especially poor reviews of Trump, with 89% not trusting him.
In almost all countries where trends were available, the American president got even lower ratings compared to what the previous US leader, Barack Obama, got when Trump was inaugurated.
Pew pointed out that its 2017 global poll had showed trust in Obama dropped worldwide following Trump’s inauguration.
According to the latest survey, many of Trump’s major policies are also unpopular the world over.
On the issue of the US increasing fees or tariffs on imported goods from other nations, a median of 68% people surveyed in 33 countries said they disapproved of Trump’s policy of raising the fees.
Lithuania was excluded from the “confidence in Trump” poll due to a processing error, bringing the number of countries surveyed down by one, to 32 countries.
When it came to voicing their opinion on the US withdrawing from global climate change agreements, 66% in 33 countries disapproved of the president’s decision to withdraw. Just 14% said they approved of him.
On Trump’s policies of building a wall on the US-Mexico border, allowing fewer immigrants into the country, withdrawing from Iran nuclear deal and negotiating with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un about his country’s nuclear weapons program; 60%, 55%, 52% and 36% said they disapproved of the policies, respectively. Twenty-four percent, 34%, 29% and 41% said they approved of the president’s policies, respectively.
President Trump also got most negative marks among the five global leaders tested on the poll (32 countries; excluding Lithuania due to a processing error).
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who received the highest marks – a median of 46%, had just a median of 29% people worldwide not trusting her leadership in global affairs.
French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping received 41%, 33% and 28% positive and 36%, 57% and 43% negative marks, respectively.
In this global Pew poll, views of the United States as a country stayed relatively favorable, however, with a median of 54% people in 33 nations seeing the country favorably, while 38% unfavorably.
