BelVita recall: some Breakfast Sandwich products have undeclared peanut allergen | 0% Opinion

Mondelez Global LLC has announced a voluntary recall of two varieties of its belVita Breakfast Sandwich products, manufactured and sold in the US. The Chicago-based American multinational confectionery, food, holding, beverage and snack food company markets its products in more than 150 countries.

The reason for the belVita recall is a possible inclusion of undeclared peanut in the products’ varieties. Mondelez says the products may have gotten it from cross-contact on a single manufacturing line.

The recall is limited to eight belVita Breakfast Sandwich products available at retail stores in the US.

“No other belVita products, Mondelēz Global LLC products, or markets outside the United States are included in or affected by this recall,” says the company in its announcement published on FDA’s website.

To be specific, the belVita products affected by the recall include Dark Chocolate Creme variety (8.8, 14.08, 1 lb 5.12, 14.08 and 2 lb 12 oz cartons and 1.76 oz pouch) and Cinnamon Brown Sugar with Vanilla Creme variety (8.8 oz carton and 1.76 oz pouch).

“We became aware of this issue during an internal manufacturing inspection, when we found the potential presence of peanut protein residue on the line used to make these products,” says the company.

Mondelez said in the announcement published on Monday it was aware of three unconfirmed reports of possible allergic reaction related to these products.

“Consumers who have a peanut allergy should not eat these products and should discard any product identified…,” the company advises consumers.

BelVita is among Mondelez’s $1 billion dollar brands. Other Mondelez brands in the $1b club include Oreo, Milka, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Philadelphia, Clif and Toblerone.

BelVita was launched in France as Lu Petit Dejeuner in 1998. The brand’s name was changed to the present one in 2010. It expanded to North America in 2012 following launching in seven other European countries in 2000, Brazil in 2010 and the UK in 2011.
