Virginia to install 392 EV charging ports with $10M+ in federal funding

Virginia is set to receive a significant boost in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with over $10 million in federal funding.

US Senators Tim Kaine and Mark R. Warner (both D-VA) have revealed that the Virginia Department of Energy will receive $10,797,461 in federal funding to install 392 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports at various rural as well as urban tourism spots throughout Virginia.

More than half of these chargers will be installed in disadvantaged communities to increase EV accessibility for all Virginians.

The funding was allocated through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program of the U.S. Department of Transportation. It was made possible thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that both the senators supported.

The initiative aims to support the growing demand for EVs and promote a cleaner, more sustainable future.

In a joint statement, both the senators said in a press release their offices published, “Electric vehicles will help create healthier communities for future generations by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.”

“However, it’s critical that Virginians who choose to purchase EVs have access to charging stations so they can get where they need to go,” their shared comment goes on to read.

“We’re glad the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law we helped pass is bringing this funding to Virginia to install EV charging ports across the Commonwealth, especially in areas that receive a high volume of visitors,” the senators conclude their mutual remark.

Senators Kaine and Warner have consistently supported initiatives to advance the clean energy sector of Virginia. The Inflation Reduction Act got passed thanks to their votes, expanding access to EV tech and giving tax credits to the buyers of electric vehicles. The senators also announced back in 2022 that nearly $16 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding was allocated to install EV charging ports in Virginia.

This latest round of funding will further enhance Virginia’s EV infrastructure, ensuring that residents and visitors alike have access to convenient and reliable charging options. The initiative underscores the commitment to a sustainable future and the importance of making clean energy accessible to all communities.
