Bill Cassidy calls H.R. 1 ‘a recipe for election disaster and fraud’

Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.) called House Resolution (H.R.) 1 – For the People Act of 2021 “a recipe for election disaster and fraud” in his op-ed published by Louisiana’s largest daily newspaper, The Advocate, last week on Friday.

In his piece, which was also published in its entirety in the press releases section of his official website today, Senator Cassidy highlighted major issues with H.R. 1.

“Democrats argue that House Resolution 1 is about voting rights, but this bill attempts to do a heck of a lot more than that – and it’s not a good thing,” wrote the senator.

After then calling the resolution the recipe, Dr. Bill Cassidy wrote, “We can all agree that every legal vote cast should be counted. But that’s not what this bill does. This is not a voting rights bill. Ballot harvesting, letting non-citizens vote – this is an attempt to rig the system to help Democratic politicians stay in power.”

The bill was introduced in the House by Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) on January 4. It passed the lower house of the Congress by the Yeas and Nays: 220 – 210 on March 3. The act was received in the Senate on March 11 and was introduced in the upper chamber of the Congress by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Or.) as S.1 on March 17. On the day it was introduced In the Senate, the bill was read twice and referred to the Committee on Rules and Administration. Seven days later, the committee held hearings.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-Sc.) also spoke earlier this month at a press conference with South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to discuss the impact H.R. 1 would have on the state’s elections.

Senator Graham called the bill “an attempt by the radical left to take over every election system in the country.” He also said that the act “would take away from the states the ability to redistrict for congressional purposes” and that it “will destroy ballot integrity.”

According to the introduction in the bill, it is “an act” “to expand Americans’ access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, strengthen ethics rules for public servants, and implement other anti-corruption measures for the purpose of fortifying our democracy, and for other purposes.”
