Val Demings: Truth, right, wrong don’t matter to Trump administration

US Representative Val Demings (D-FL-10) released a statement Thursday on the decision of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to drop charges against former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, calling the Trump administration an administration to whom truth, right and wrong do not matter.

“Michael Flynn lied to the FBI about contact with the Russians and pleaded guilty twice,” said Rep. Demings. “The president knows that Flynn is guilty, saying in 2017, ‘I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI’.”

She added, “But truth, right and wrong don’t matter to this administration. By dismantling the prosecution of Flynn’s case, the president and the attorney general have protected one of their corrupt political allies at the cost of the rule of law in America.”

Demings currently serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Homeland Security Committee and Judiciary Committee.

She started the statement, saying, “The danger of this moment cannot be overstated. America will not survive as a democracy if the president and his allies are above the law, especially if their crimes relate to efforts to cheat in an election. This is exactly what we warned of during the president’s impeachment.”

The US representative serving Florida’s 10th Congressional District also served as a manager in the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

She criticized Republicans for failing to stop the administration from putting themselves above the law.

“We have seen other nations around the world slide from democracies to autocracies. It starts when corrupt leaders put themselves and their allies above the law,” the statement reads. “Senate Republicans had a chance to stop this, and instead put party over duty and honor. Now, only the American people have the power to hinder the decline of our democracy.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden said on Thursday Demings was on his list of potential running mates, according to The Hill.

Talking on MSNBC‘s “Morning Joe” on Wednesday, the congresswoman said she would be “honored” to serve with Biden if asked.

The Washington Post reported last month that Biden wanted a woman as his running mate and wrote that Val Demings could be the one.
